Demystifying Maths

About Me

Hi, I'm Joel. I am a 17 year old from England, where I attended a Wardolf School up to and including GCSEs, and I'm currently a student in Pune, India, where we are living as a family for two to three years. I am self-studying for A levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, at the same time as attending a learner-lead micro-school.

I love computer programming, and I've really enjoyed learning multiple languages over the past several years. I learned to code in html specifically to create this website - at the time of writing that was three days ago, and I now have my first article (Angle Units), and a few other main pages.

Please send me any feedback on this site. As I said, I'm a total beginner at web design but I'd always appreciate any tips or suggestions to help me improve.

My other interests include 3d modelling and printing (I'm learning to use Blender at the moment), reading (the last book I read was Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, which I'd highly recommend), badminton, chess (my highest blitz rating is 1405, which is about 94th percentile), music (any era, as long as I can sing along) and of course maths.

I have always had an affinity for maths, probably fueled in my younger years at least in part by the feeling of supremacy that comes with being good at something ;) Now, however, I see clearly enough that the reason mathematics resonates so well with me is because of its comprehensibility, because everything new can be traced back to things you already understand in a way that can make you feel like you might have discovered it yourself, given enough time.

My aim is to share that feeling, as some other people are doing on the web - specifically YouTube channels like @3blue1brown which uses amazing visuals generated with Python code. (The library is called manim, for any interested).

This is my YouTube playlist: @joelzactaylor. I have created a few videos, but not too many. I doubt I will make many more in the foreseeable future, but if anyone has requests then do contact me and I'll consider it.

Here are my accounts on other platforms:

  • Scratch – a block-based programming site, whose potential is very rarely realised (although I have tried; check it out)

  • My LinkedIn account, where I try document key parts of my main projects.

  • My account on Chess.com if you want to challenge me to a game :)

Anyway, get yourself off this About page and explore the rest of my website! Go!
