Demystifying - Exact answers

Drills

Giving and recognising exact answers, as fractions or in terms of π, rather than rounded decimals.

Author note — to cover

Leaving answers as fractions or multiples of pi rather than rounded decimals, which N8 requires at both tiers; recognising exact values beside rounded lookalikes like 1/3 versus 0.333. Exact surd answers are Higher, in the surds group; the calculator toggle lives on calculator-exact-values. (N8)

  • Fluency — single-choice questions picking the exact value of a calculation from rounded lookalikes; fraction answers appear only as choices, since the engine cannot parse a typed fraction (4 questions).
  • Application — multi-step calculations whose exact answer is a fraction or a multiple of π, with the coefficient of π typed as a bare number and the form chosen (4 questions).
  • Catch — recurring decimals like 0.333… offered beside 1/3, where the rounded option is the trap (3 questions).
